Living Beside Waterfall Glen

Tree Removal in Darien happens in a city with one of the oldest woodlands in DuPage County on its doorstep. The entire south edge of Darien borders Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, 2,492 acres of woods, savanna and ravines around Argonne National Laboratory. In the preserve's Bluff Savanna, some black and white oaks, shagbark and bitternut hickories and black walnuts are 180 to 215 years old. Homes near the preserve often have big native trees on their lots, too.

A city of long-time owners

Darien incorporated in 1969 and has about 22,000 residents. Census QuickFacts shows 24.3% are 65 or older, one of the highest shares in the area, with a 78.8% owner-occupied rate and 90.7% in the same house as a year earlier. Many owners have lived with their trees for decades. Some trees that were small when the house was new now loom over roofs and drop large limbs. For older homeowners, the effort of keeping up with a big tree is a real factor in deciding whether to keep it.

The 2021 tornado

On June 20, 2021, an EF3 tornado that formed in south Naperville and crossed Woodridge moved into Darien, causing severe damage to homes along Lemont Road and downing trees across the area. Some trees that survived lost large parts of their crowns or were loosened at the roots. A few years later, some of those trees are still declining. If one in your yard has never recovered, have it checked.

Is your tree a hazard?

Things to look for:

  • Large dead limbs, especially over the house, driveway or play areas
  • Cracks or splits at main forks
  • Cavities, soft wood or mushrooms at the base
  • A lean that has appeared or worsened since a storm
  • Roots lifted or cut by construction

If you see any of these, a closer look is worthwhile.

Removing trees near preserve land

We remove trees on private property only. If a preserve tree is threatening your home, contact the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. On your side of the line, wooded lots often need careful rigging, since the removal zone may be crowded with other trees you want to keep.

Oaks deserve a second look

With so many old oaks in and near Darien, we are careful about recommending removal. A mature oak with some dead wood can often be pruned and kept. If an oak does need to come down, especially a red oak with signs of oak wilt, the wood should be handled promptly to avoid spreading the disease.

Stumps and cleanup

We grind stumps below grade, chip brush and haul or stack wood. On lots next to the preserve, we keep debris on your side of the line.

Older homes, newer additions

Some Darien homes have been expanded over the years with additions, decks and larger garages, and those projects often end up right next to a tree that was planted when the house was new. Roots damaged by footings and patio work can take years to show the harm. A tree that started thinning a few summers after construction is a common reason to get it checked before a storm makes the decision for you.

Darien Questions

Who removes a dead tree on Waterfall Glen land behind my house?

That is the forest preserve district's decision. Contact them with photos and a description. If the tree is on your property, we can remove it.

Should I remove an old oak that drops branches?

Not necessarily. Old oaks shed small branches naturally. Large dead limbs over the house can often be pruned out. Removal makes sense if the trunk or roots are failing, or if oak wilt is involved.

My tree was damaged in 2021. Is it too late to deal with it?

No. If it has not recovered, it may be getting weaker. We can inspect it and recommend pruning, monitoring or removal.
