Pruning That Keeps a Tree Standing
Tree trimming and pruning is often what keeps a removal from being needed. A maple with a heavy limb over the bedroom, a honeylocust brushing the gutters, a spruce whose lower branches block the driveway view, an oak carrying deadwood over the patio: most of these can be fixed with careful cuts rather than taking the tree down. Good pruning follows the ANSI A300 standard and ISA guidance, which means cutting at the branch collar, removing no more of the live crown than the tree can afford, and never topping a tree.
What pruning does here
Naperville storms test weak structure. Wet spring snow, freezing rain and summer thunderstorm gusts find the tight V-shaped forks, long heavy limbs and old wounds on a tree. Thinning a dense crown lets wind pass through. Shortening long, overextended limbs reduces the lever that tears them out. Removing a competing leader on a young tree prevents the split that comes years later. Taking out deadwood removes the pieces most likely to fall on someone.
Timing for oaks
Oak wilt, a fungal disease that kills red oaks quickly and weakens white and bur oaks, is spread partly by sap beetles drawn to fresh wounds. The usual advice in northern Illinois is to avoid pruning oaks during the growing season, roughly April through July, unless a limb is broken or dangerous. Late fall and winter are the safer times for oak work. We schedule oak pruning around that.
Clearance work
- Roofs and gutters: limbs cut back so they do not scrape shingles or drop leaves straight into the gutters.
- Driveways and sidewalks: lower limbs raised so cars, trucks and people pass under safely.
- Service lines: we can clear small branches near the line that runs from the pole to your house only where it is safe and allowed; main distribution lines are the utility's job, which in Naperville is generally the city's electric utility.
- Neighbors: limbs overhanging a property line can be cut back to the line, ideally after talking to your neighbor.
What we will not do
We do not top trees. Cutting a tree's main stems back to stubs causes a flush of weak, fast sprouts that break off in storms and decay that spreads into the trunk. If a tree is too big for its spot and topping looks like the only option, removal and replanting is usually the better answer, and we will tell you so.
Pruning Options
Each kind of cut solves a different problem.
Deadwood removal
Dead and dying branches taken out, the most common and most useful pruning job.
Crown thinning
Selected live branches removed to reduce weight and wind load without changing the tree's shape much.
Crown raising
Lower limbs removed to clear driveways, walks, roofs and lawns.
Crown reduction
Long limbs shortened back to suitable side branches to reduce size and leverage.
Structural pruning
Young trees shaped to one strong leader and well-spaced limbs.

How Pruning Works
1. Walk the tree with you
You tell us what bothers you; we point out deadwood, weak forks and clearance problems.
2. Agree on the cuts
The quote describes the pruning goal and roughly how much will come out.
3. Prune
Cuts made at the branch collar, with larger limbs lowered on ropes over roofs and beds.
4. Final cleanup
Brush chipped and the yard raked; chips left or hauled as you choose.

Why Choose Us for Tree Trimming & Pruning
Standards-based cuts
Pruning follows ANSI A300 practice: collar cuts, measured crown removal, no topping.
Seasonal timing
Oaks pruned outside the high-risk months for oak wilt unless a limb is dangerous.
Removal not oversold
When pruning can solve the problem, that is what we quote.
Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How often should trees in Naperville be trimmed?
Most mature shade trees do well with a check and deadwood pruning every three to five years. Young trees benefit from light structural pruning every couple of years while they grow. Fast-growing species like silver maple may need attention more often.
When should I prune my oak?
Late fall through winter is the safest window. The usual advice in northern Illinois is to avoid pruning oaks from about April through July, when the beetles that spread oak wilt are active, unless a branch is broken or dangerous.
Can you trim branches near my power lines?
Branches near the main lines along the street or back lot line are the utility's responsibility; in Naperville that is generally the city's electric utility. We can sometimes clear around the service drop to the house when it is safe, and we will tell you which is which.
Can I cut my neighbor's branches that hang over my yard?
In general you can trim branches back to your property line, as long as the work does not harm the tree's health. It is wise to talk to your neighbor first, and for a large limb, we can plan the cut so it does not damage the tree.
Is tree trimming cheaper than tree removal?
Usually, yes. HomeGuide's national figures put trimming at about $400 to $900 per tree, compared with $500 to $1,500 to remove a 30 to 60 foot tree. If a tree can be kept healthy and safe with pruning, it is often the better value.
