A Village Named for a Tree
Tree Removal in Willowbrook often starts with the tree the village is named after. Willowbrook took its name from a grove of willows along a local creek that flows south into Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve. The village incorporated in 1960 with just 157 residents and grew to 9,236 by 2020. It covers about 2.6 square miles in Downers Grove Township and borders Hinsdale, Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Burr Ridge and Darien. Old Route 66 runs along its southern edge.
The trouble with willows
Willows love wet ground and grow very quickly, which is why they line creeks and ponds. That speed comes at a cost. Willow wood is soft and brittle, limbs break off in wind and ice, and old willows often develop hollow trunks. Their roots go looking for water and can find their way into drain tiles and sewer lines. A willow far from the house can be kept with periodic pruning, but one leaning over a roof or driveway is a frequent removal request.
Willow Pond and wet ground
Willow Pond, a once-swampy pond along Route 83, was cleaned up in 1990 and now has a trail around it. Low areas around the pond and creek stay wet, and trees there tend to root shallowly. After heavy rain, those are the trees most likely to tip in strong wind. If you notice a new lean or lifted soil at the base of a tree near water, have it checked.
An older population
Willowbrook's median age is about 49, and many residents have lived here for decades. The village has about 3,900 households. Many of the trees around them were planted in the 1960s through the 1980s and are now large and mature. Common removal requests:
- Old willows and silver maples with brittle wood
- Dead ash trees
- Spruces that have lost their lower branches and crowd buildings
- Trees with decay at the base
- Storm-damaged trees in yards and common areas
Condos and townhome associations
If you live in a Willowbrook townhome or condo community, the trees on common ground are usually the association's responsibility. If you are on a board or manage a property, we can give one estimate covering every tree, with each one listed and priced so the board can decide what to approve.
Near Waterfall Glen
The creek that gave Willowbrook its name flows into Waterfall Glen, the 2,492-acre forest preserve to the south. Homes near the preserve and creek corridors often have woodland trees at the back of the lot. We cut only on private property and leave preserve trees to the forest preserve district.
Removal and cleanup
We take trees down in sections where space is tight and fell them where there is room. Brush is chipped, wood is hauled or left for you, and stumps can be ground below grade. Grinding near creeks is done carefully so the bank is not disturbed.
Seasonal timing
For planned removals near creeks and ponds, late summer and winter are often the easiest times, since the ground is drier or frozen and lawns and banks hold up better under foot traffic and equipment. Storm damage does not wait, and urgent calls are handled as they come. For anything else, we are glad to schedule around your plans.

Willowbrook Questions
Should I remove the willow by my creek?
If it is healthy and away from the house, pruning may be enough. If it is hollow, leaning toward the house or dropping large limbs often, removal is usually safer.
Can willow roots damage my sewer line?
They can. Willow roots seek out water and can enter cracked pipes. A plumber can assess the line, and we can remove the tree if that is the best solution.
Do you work with Willowbrook condo associations?
Yes. We give one estimate covering all the trees, each listed with its own price.
