The Ridge That Named the Village
Tree Removal in Woodridge often happens on a slope. The village grew up on a wooded, steep hillside known locally as The Ridge, overlooking the East Branch of the DuPage River and the Des Plaines Valley, and that hillside gave Woodridge its name. Developer Albert Kaufman built most of the village after it incorporated in 1959, so the majority of homes date from the 1960s onward. Many of the trees planted then, along with the native woodland trees that were left standing, are now 60 years old or more.
Five years after the tornado
Just after 11 p.m. on June 20, 2021, an EF3 tornado moved from south Naperville into Woodridge, damaging about 225 homes in Woodridge and nearby suburbs and wrecking the garage at St. Scholastica. Thousands of trees came down across the path. Trees that survived took a beating: twisted trunks, torn-out tops, cracked unions and loosened roots. Some of those trees have slowly lost vigor since. If you live in the storm path and have a tree that has never looked right since, it is worth an assessment.
Questions to ask about a storm-survivor tree
- Has the crown filled back in, or are there still large dead sections?
- Are there cracks at the main forks or along the trunk?
- Has the tree started to lean, or has the soil heaved at the base?
- Are new shoots sprouting thickly along the trunk, a sign of stress?
- Are there mushrooms or soft wood at the base?
Two or more yes answers usually point toward removal.
Hillside removals
On The Ridge, gravity is part of every job. A felled trunk can slide, and dropped limbs roll. We generally take hillside trees down in sections, lowering each piece with rigging, and plan the haul route up or down the slope before starting. Retaining walls, terraced beds and decks on steep lots get extra protection.
A canopy the village has tracked
Woodridge has been recognized as a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation for well over a decade, and a 1996 study counted more than 8,000 publicly owned trees in the village. Parkway trees are part of that public canopy. If a tree in the strip between the sidewalk and street is a problem, check with the village before anyone cuts it.
Typical Woodridge removals
- Dead ash and storm-damaged trees from the 2021 path
- Oaks and hickories on wooded hillside lots near the house
- Overgrown spruces and pines blocking driveways or crowding siding
- Trees in townhome and condo common areas
- Stump grinding after removals, including on slopes
Wood and debris on a slope
Brush and logs from a hillside job have to go somewhere. We chip limbs as we go and either haul the wood or stack it where you want it, out of the way of drainage paths. If you would like a few rounds left for firewood or a garden border, say so during the estimate and we will note it. Grinding holes on slopes get backfilled so they do not wash out in the next storm.

Woodridge Questions
Can you remove a tree on a steep slope behind my house?
Yes. Steep-slope removals are usually done in sections with rigging, so pieces are controlled all the way down. We look at the slope, walls and access during the estimate and explain the plan.
My tree survived the 2021 tornado. Is it safe now?
Many survivors are fine, but some have hidden cracks or root damage. We can inspect it and tell you whether it needs pruning, monitoring or removal.
Does our townhome association need one estimate or several?
One estimate can cover every tree, with each listed separately so the board can approve what it wants.
