An Old River Town With Old Trees
Tree Removal in Geneva tends to involve trees that have been growing for a long time. Geneva was named the seat of Kane County in 1836, platted the next year and incorporated as a city in 1887. By 1900, Swedish immigrants made up half its population, and many of the homes they and later generations built near the Fox River still stand. Lots in the older parts of town have big oaks, maples and elms that shade the house, the street and the neighbors' yards at once.
Owners here stay a long time
Geneva has one of the highest owner-occupancy rates in the Fox Valley. Census QuickFacts puts it at 85.1%, with 91.2% of residents living in the same house as a year earlier and a median owner-occupied value of $441,400. The median age is about 44. When people stay that long, they get to know their trees. The calls we get usually come after years of watching a tree slowly decline: a crown that thins a bit more every summer, a limb that drops in every storm, or a crack that has gotten longer.
Reasons Geneva trees come down
- Dead or dying tops on large maples and oaks
- Ash trees killed by emerald ash borer and left standing
- Hollow trunks and fungus at the base
- Trees planted too close to the house decades ago
- Splits and broken leaders after summer storms
- Trees in the way of an addition, garage or driveway
Fabyan and the riverfront
The Fabyan Windmill, a five-story wooden smock mill from the 1850s that stands 68 feet tall, is one of the Fox River landmarks just south of downtown and is now part of the Kane County Forest Preserve District. Trees along this stretch of river, as in most of the Fox Valley, include fast-growing cottonwoods, silver maples and willows. On private riverfront lots, those trees drop heavy limbs and can lean as the bank erodes. Removing them takes planning so wood stays out of the water and the bank is not damaged.
Working around older houses
Older Geneva homes may have slate or cedar roofs, stone foundations, porches and detached garages close to the trees. We do not drop limbs or trunks onto anything that cannot take it. On tight lots the tree is taken down in pieces, each lowered on a rope. If the tree is too weak to climb or is leaning over the house, a crane can lift pieces out instead. We tell you which approach we plan and why before the work date.
When to schedule
Planned removals are often easiest in late fall and winter, when leaves are down and frozen ground protects lawns and gardens. Storm damage, of course, needs prompt attention. If a tree or limb is on the house or blocking the drive, call (630) 864-5605 and leave the details any time.
Stumps and replanting
We grind stumps below the surface so turf or beds can go back in. Many Geneva owners replant after a removal; a few feet away from the old stump is usually the best spot, since the ground right at the stump is full of grindings and old roots.

Geneva Questions
Can you remove a tree near my slate roof without damaging it?
Yes. We lower limbs on ropes rather than dropping them, and nothing is allowed to land on the roof. The plan for protecting the house is part of the written estimate.
Do I need permission to remove a tree in Geneva's historic area?
Historic rules mainly cover buildings, but it is worth checking with the city if you live in a designated district or if the tree is in the parkway. We will hold off on any tree in question until you confirm.
How long does a typical removal take?
Many single-tree removals take part of a day. Large trees close to houses, or jobs with several trees, can take longer. The estimate gives you a realistic idea of the time involved.
