When a Storm Puts a Tree Where It Does Not Belong
Emergency storm tree removal is a different kind of job from a planned takedown. The tree is already partly down, it may be resting on a roof or a car with tension stored in the trunk, and limbs can be hung up in the canopy waiting to fall. In Naperville, where most homes sit under mature subdivision trees and the ground is heavy clay that turns soft in wet weather, a single strong thunderstorm can uproot a big maple or split an ash in half. If a tree is on your house or across your driveway, call (630) 864-5605 and leave the details; we work storm calls in order of danger.
What Naperville storms look like
The city has seen the worst kind. On June 20, 2021, an EF-3 tornado formed at the west edge of Springbrook Prairie and cut east through south Naperville, near Plainfield-Naperville Road, Princeton Circle and Ranchview Drive, before crossing into Woodridge, Darien and Burr Ridge. The National Weather Service reported thousands of trees down along that path, including large trees that fell on Naperville Fire Station 2. Most storm damage here is smaller and more common: lines of summer thunderstorms, derechos like the one in August 2020 that brought 60 to 70 mph winds across northern Illinois, wet snow on trees that are still in leaf, and freezing rain in winter.
First, safety
If a tree is touching a power line, assume the line is live. Keep everyone away and call the electric utility; in Naperville that is generally the city's own electric department, and in many surrounding towns it is ComEd. If a tree has come through the roof, get people out of that part of the house. Do not try to cut a trunk that is bent or pinned under load; the stored tension can make a chainsaw cut kick or the trunk spring with enough force to injure someone badly.
How we work a storm call
The first job is to take the weight off the house or car without causing more damage. That often means removing the top and limbs first, then lifting or lowering the trunk in sections. Sometimes a crane is the safest way to pick a large trunk off a roof, and if one is needed we arrange it and tell you before it is booked. Once the tree is off the structure, you can get a roofer or a tarp crew in. Remaining hangers and broken leaders are taken down next, then the rest of the tree is cleaned up.
Insurance and records
Take photos of the tree and the damage before anything is moved, if you can do it safely. Homeowner policies often treat a tree that hits a covered structure differently from a tree that falls in an open yard, so call your insurer early. We provide a written, itemized invoice that describes the work, which helps with a claim.
Storm Work We Handle
Storm calls range from one hanging limb to a whole tree through the roof.
Trees on roofs and vehicles
Weight taken off in a controlled order so the structure is not damaged further.
Uprooted and leaning trees
Trees pulled out of soaked clay, or tipped with the root plate lifted, taken down before they fall the rest of the way.
Hangers and split leaders
Broken limbs caught in the canopy and trunks split at a weak fork, removed before they drop.
Driveway and access clearing
Trunks and limbs cut and moved so you can get cars and people in and out.
Storm debris cleanup
Brush chipped and wood cut up or hauled after the urgent work is done.

Storm Call Steps
1. Call and describe it
Tell us where the tree is, what it is on, whether wires are involved and whether anyone is hurt or trapped (if so, call 911 first).
2. Utility first if needed
If lines are involved, the utility has to make them safe before tree work starts.
3. Assess and price
We look at how the tree is loaded and give you a written price for the urgent part and for the cleanup.
4. Take the weight off
The tree is removed from the structure in a controlled sequence, sometimes with a crane.
5. Finish and clean up
Hangers and damaged limbs come down, then wood and brush are handled as agreed.

Emergency Storm Tree Removal Questions
Can I call at night or on a weekend after a storm?
You can call (630) 864-5605 any time to leave details about the tree and the damage. Storm calls are worked in order of danger, starting with trees on houses and blocked driveways, and we will tell you honestly when we can be there.
Will my insurance pay for storm tree removal?
Often, when a tree damages a covered structure such as the house or a garage, but policies differ. A tree that falls in an open part of the yard without hitting anything may not be covered. Call your insurer, take photos first, and ask us for an itemized invoice.
A big limb is hanging in my tree. Can it wait?
A hanging limb over a walkway, driveway, play area or roof should not wait, since wind or its own weight can bring it down without warning. Keep people out from under it and call. A broken limb over open lawn is less urgent but still worth dealing with soon.
My neighbor's tree fell into my yard. Who is responsible?
In many cases the owner of the property where the tree lands handles the cleanup through their own insurance, unless the tree was obviously dead or hazardous beforehand. That is a question for your insurer. We can quote the work either way.
Why did my tree uproot instead of snapping?
Naperville's heavy clay soils hold a lot of water, and when they are saturated, the root plate loses its grip. In a wet-season windstorm a full-leafed tree can tip over roots and all. A tree that has started to lean with soil cracked or raised on one side should be looked at right away.
